My name is Janet Cheng and I proudly identify as a Yamaji, Wajarri, Wiradjuri woman. My roots trace back to Larrikiya country in Northern Territory, Darwin, where I was born. But I spent my formative years on Wiradjuri Land in Cowra. My heritage stems from the Yamaji and Wajarri communities of Geraldton in Western Australia. I have danced with and been strongly connected to Dinawan’s Connection (a cultural group deeply rooted in Country, sharing Aboriginal dance and culture) since childhood. I have participated in many cultural gatherings and Corroborrees. In 2023 I was a member of Bangarra Dance Theatre’s Rekindling Youth Program, performing at Qudos Bank Arena and at Schools Spectacular. I am currently studying for my Certificate IV at NAISDA and aim to increase my dance skills and deepen my cultural understanding. My ultimate goal is to become an independent artist, bridging the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities through dance, music, and art.
