NAISDA is deeply grateful for the support of the Joanne Harris Scholarship Fund Estate Executors and their commitment of time and interest in the journey of all NAISDA Developing Artists – and in particular scholarship and bursary recipients.
Joanne Harris Bursary Program
A $3,000 bursary is available to help remove barriers and stresses that young Developing Artists experience as they commit themselves to a rigorous training regime. The NAISDA Bursary Program is open to NAISDA Developing Artists who have completed at least one year of study at NAISDA. NAISDA is able to offer a number of bursaries annually to in-need Developing Artists to assist with living expenses during their studies.
The 2024 Bursary Program is now closed.
Joanne Harris Gifted and Talented Scholarship
The Gifted and Talented Scholarship to available to a NAISDA Practicing Artist of their Advanced Diploma to attend the 6-week Alvin Ailey Summer School in New York or other similar programs approved by NAISDA. This grant is for up to $10,000 and will be selected on the merit of the application.
ELIGIBILITY AND BURSARY AMOUNT

Due to the generosity of the Joanne Harris Scholarship Fund, NAISDA is able to offer a Practicing Artist in their first 12 months of study a one-off placement of $10,000 to attend 6-week summer school at Ailey School or approved alternative with the desired outcome of improved technical dance standards.
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA AND PROCESS

The study course must be completed by the end of the second year of the Advanced Diploma course and preference will be given to Practising Artists who have completed the Cert III- Diploma courses as an affirmative measure.
This scholarship will be awarded on a competitive basis to a NAISDA Practising Artist who is/has:
- Enrolled at NAISDA in the Advanced Diploma course.
- Studying at NAISDA for two consecutive years or enrolled in another dance course prior to enrolling in the NAISDA Advanced Diploma course.
- An attendance rate of at least 85% for the previous year of study or attendance from previous study documented.
- Confirmation of acceptance into a chosen place of study or application receipt.
- Without any current NAISDA warning letters in place.
- Prior dance cultural training/knowledge.
- Documented results from previous study or cultural engagement that fit with the above criteria.
Process:
An online application must be fully completed to be eligible with a detailed budget of the proposal.
A scholarship briefing will be held for all applicants when the scholarship is announced.
Your application will be checked for eligibility against the requirements in the guidelines.
The assessment panel will comprise of:
- NAISDA CEO (facilitator)
- Advanced Diploma Coordinator
- NAISDA Head of Dance
- 1 external Senior Indigenous Dance Artist (this may be someone who teaches at NAISDA, but not on a regular basis)
NAISDA will provide confirmation of receipt of application. Successful applicants will be notified 2 to 4 weeks after the closing date.

Scholarship Conditions
On return from the period of study, the successful applicant agrees to:
- Present two masterclasses to NAISDA Developing Artists (details of which will be negotiated with the Advanced Diploma Coordinator) and;
- Give a presentation on your period of study to the full NAISDA cohort (details of the presentation are to be agreed to by the Advanced Diploma Coordinator prior to the presentation).
General Conditions
By filling in an application you agree to:
- Accept the conditions and assessment process set out in these guidelines.
- Cover any costs associated with your study that are not covered by this scholarship.
- Any additional conditions placed on receipt of the grant by NAISDA.
- Be available for any media organised by NAISDA.
- Give permission for the presentation to the NAISDA cohort to be recorded and used for NAISDA educational studies and media purpose such as website, Facebook etc.
- All administration of this grant, including payment of fees, travel costs etc will be completed by NAISDA.
- It is a requirement of the scholarship that the successful applicant actively participates in this activity.
