In what will be a once in a lifetime experience, NAISDA Dance College will share the stage with the world renowned Royal Ballet when it visits Cairns for a one-night-only Gala Performance in the Munro Martin Parklands on Wednesday 12 July.
In what will mark the Royal Ballet’s first time performing in Cairns, the Gala Performance will feature an ensemble of dancers from the company including solos and duos from the company’s broad repertoire including Swan Lake, Le Corsaire, Don Quixote and Romeo and Juliet.
NAISDA Dance College, Australia’s leading Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dance training institute, will open the Gala with excerpts from its critically acclaimed production From Sand to Stage.
The performance moves beyond form to reveal a new lexicon of Indigenous creativity, challenging our current social and political image of what it means to be an Indigenous Australian.
Chief Executive Officer of NAISDA, Kim Walker, said that NAISDA is thrilled to be a part of this historic performance.
“At NAISDA, our Developing Artists are given opportunities to perform all over Australia and the world, but opening for the prestigious Royal Ballet is a truly unique experience that I am sure will remain with them for the rest of their lives,” said Kim.
“This is a huge honour and we are proud to be representing Indigenous arts and culture across Australia as we take to the stage next Wednesday.
“The Royal Ballet is one of the world’s most distinguished companies and our Developing Artists will no doubt be watching the main show in awe. To say we are proud to be involved in this event is an understatement – I’m sure we will learn from them as they will from us,” added Kim.
13 of NAISDA’s Developing Artists will soon be making the trip to Cairns from NAISDA’s headquarters on the Central Coast of New South Wales to prepare for the performance of a lifetime.
