NSW Aboriginal Land Council announced as major sponsor of NAISDA Dance College’s Circle of Cultures - 25.10.16

NAISDA Dance College is proud to announce NSW Aboriginal Land Council (NSWALC) as a major sponsor of NAISDA’s special 40th anniversary season, Circle of Cultures, which will take place at Carriageworks in Redfern, Sydney from 15 to 24 November 2016.

Circle of Cultures will see NAISDA’s story come to life through three major events, including a photography exhibition, a free nightly performance of cultural dances from communities across Australia and its main stage production From Sand to Stage, Directed by Helpmann Award winning Choreographer Frances Rings.

Roy Ah-See, Chair of NSWALC, said that the Land Council is thrilled to help NAISDA celebrate its 40th anniversary as a major sponsor of the Circle of Cultures season.

“This is a huge milestone for all involved and is of particular value to NSWALC due to the many students from across NSW who have been a part of NAISDA’s journey over the past 40 years,” said Mr Ah-See.

“While NAISDA is a national organisation, it enjoys a special connection with NSW. Not only is NAISDA located on the beautiful NSW Central Coast, 26 of its current Developing Artists are from communities throughout NSW.

“Having an organisation like NAISDA share the land rights struggle through the medium of contemporary dance is also of great value to us. While organisations such as ours can talk about this struggle as much as we like, there is a whole new level of engagement that comes with telling this story through dance,” he concluded.

Similarly to NAISDA, NSWALC will be celebrating a significant milestone next year, marking 40 years since the first coming together of people to talk about Aboriginal land rights in NSW. This first meeting was instrumental in the passing of legislation some seven years later and sparked an essential conversation around the issue.

Kim Walker, CEO of NAISDA, thanked NSWALC for their support of NAISDA during this important chapter in the College’s history.

“NAISDA is thrilled to have the NSWALC on board as a major sponsor of our 40th anniversary celebrations. Their generous support means that we can continue to provide opportunities for our developing artists as we celebrate 40 years of shaping contemporary Indigenous dance,” said Mr Walker.
