Zachary O’Donnell

Zachary is a proud Gamilaroi person. His Aboriginal family comes from Coonabarabran, New South Wales. Zachary was brought up on Warumungu Country in Tennant Creek, a remote community in the Northern Territory. This is where he learnt the importance of culture, because it is such a strong presence within the community, although it has been difficult to learn about his own culture due to the long distance from his Homelands and the historical disruption caused to his family. During his secondary schooling (2019-2023), he attended co-curricular Contemporary Indigenous Dance classes led by Adrienne Semmens and Gemma Trueman, performing Contemporary Indigenous Dance for school community showings and Reconciliation assemblies. In 2023, he joined the Australian Dance Theatre’s TREAD and First Nations Dance Program, learning from Daniel Riley, Caleena Sansbury and other ADT Company Artists. He also participated in Lilla Berry’s Thirteen Sisters Development at the Adelaide Festival Centre with Co Founder and Artistic Director of Karul Projects, Thomas E. S. Kelly. Zachary is currently studying for his Certificate IV as a Developing Artist at NAISDA on Darkinjung Land, NSW Central Coast. During his time at NAISDA, he aims to deepen his understanding about himself and his culture. After graduating NAISDA, Zachary aspires to become a multidisciplinary, independent artist.
