11052NAT Diploma of Professional Dance Performance for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples

Course Overview:

This course is designed specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Developing Artists who have intermediate training in dance skills but may have no prior training or limited exposure to cultural Knowings.

Throughout the 12 month course, students will engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, develop cultural connections, learn dance and song specific to each community. These educational experiences underpin the development of student self-identity as First Nations creative art practioners and future cultural leaders. They also help develop professional and cultural community networks.

Course eligibility
  • Be of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background (evidence required)
  • Be aged between 16 to 26 years
  • Be an Australian citizen
  • Have parent or guardian consent if under 18 years of age
Entry Requirements
  • Organic progression from NAISDA’s 10988NAT Certificate IV in Dance Practice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, or
  • Intermediate level of knowledge and skills in ballet, contemporary and urban dance techniques
  • Mid to high level of Language, Literacy and Numeracy (Australian Core Skills Framework Level 4 in learning, reading, writing, oral communication and numeracy)
  • Physical readiness for intensive dance training, supported by an assessment with NAISDA’s physiotherapist or a letter from a physiotherapist confirming suitability for the course
  • Professional network within the dance and performing arts industry
  • The ability to generate original movement for choreographic process
  • Maturity, professional conduct and engagement throughout the NAISDA audition program
  • A portfolio demonstrating dance history, cultural knowledge and technique and ability to perform complex dance sequences (subject to evaluation by NAISDA , a level 5 RED in Ballet is recommended)
  • Demonstrated connection to Community and Country within the context of Contemporary Indigenous Dance (CID)
Learning and Job Outcomes

Upon successful completion Developing Artists may be able to:

  • Progress organically to 11372NAT Advanced Diploma of Professional Dance Practice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples
  • Apply integrated technical and theoretical concepts across a broad range of professional dance contexts for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, in order to undertake advanced skilled or paraprofessional work or as a pathway to further learning
  • Demonstrate the ability to identify, research and interpret relevant information, prepare written material and communicate effectively
  • Work professionally as a dancer in an ensemble or as a soloist
  • Work professionally as a Choreographer
  • Work professionally as an Assistant Contemporary Dance or Cultural Teacher
