11051NAT Certificate IV in Dance Practice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples

Course Overview:

This course prepares learners to advance their foundation skills in Contemporary Indigenous Dance and improve their ability to follow complex dance sequences and perform to industry standards.

Throughout the 12 month course students will engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, develop cultural connections, learn dance and song specific to each community.

These skills and Knowings vary across communities, reflecting the cultural diversity between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Students will also build professional and cultural community networks while developing self-identity as First Nations creative art practitioners and future cultural leaders.

Course eligibility
  • Be of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background (evidence required)
  • Be aged between 16 to 26 years
  • Be an Australian citizen
  • Have parent or guardian consent if under 18 years of age
Entry Requirements
  • Foundation-level and background in contemporary dance and ballet
  • Prior formal or informal engagement with dance training through high school or dance classes, including dance performance experience
  • Organic progression from NAISDA’s 10988NAT Certificate III in Dance Practice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples course
  • Low to mid-level of Language, Literacy and Numeracy skills (Australian Core Skills Framework ACF Level 3 for numeracy, reading and writing, and level 4 for oral communication and learning).
  • Digital literacy skills (Australian Core Skills Framework level 4)
  • Physical readiness for safe participation in training, supported by an assessment with NAISDA’s physiotherapist or a letter from a physiotherapist confirming suitability for the course
  • Demonstrated maturity and engagement with the audition program and activities at NASIDA
  • Exposure to First Nations cultural dance practice and community awareness
  • Some level of engagement with the dance industry or broader creative arts sector
Learning and Job Outcomes

Upon successful completion Developing Artists may be able to:

  • Progress organically to the 11052NAT Diploma of Professional Dance Performance for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples
  • Begin a professional pathway into the cultural and creative arts industry
  • Pursue a career as an Assistant Dance Teacher in a contemporary or cultural environment
  • Work as a dancer within an ensemble or as an independent solo artist
