Advanced Diploma Developing Artist Lena Parkes has recently returned to NAISDA after travelling to New York City for a two-week immersive dance and cultural experience, made possible through the Joanne Harris Scholarship Fund.
A Malyangapa and Ngiyampaa woman, born and raised on Wiradjuri Country, Lena spent her time in the global arts capital honing her skills and soaking up the rich creative and cultural life of the city.
Her schedule included high-level workshops at renowned institutions including the Broadway Dance Centre, Peridance, The Ailey Studios and Steps on Broadway.
In between classes that touched on a wide range of dance styles from contemporary to hip-hop, West-African to ballet, Lena explored some of New York’s most iconic cultural landmarks, visiting the Museum of Modern Art, taking a Civil Rights walking tour of Harlem, and attending a some of Broadway’s biggest theatre shows including MJ The Musical, Chicago and The Lion King.
Lena enjoyed the intensive schedule, which saw her take part in more than 30 classes during her fortnight long trip, and the opportunity to learn from new teachers in a different environment.
“Going into class they push you a lot harder than I get here sometimes, in a positive way – it was all out of love,” Lena said.
“Everyone was so competitive, in a good way. They knew what they wanted from each class and it was really interesting seeing that.”
Lena says she was forever grateful to receive the Joanne Harris Scholarship Fund that supports the professional development of NAISDA Developing Artists by providing opportunities to engage with national and international industry leaders and training environments.
“It has changed my view on dance,” Lena said.
“That experience has made me want to be a professional dancer more and to push myself and go beyond my limits.”
