Director’s Message
wiri gulgul – Stand Strong: a call to all our people to stand strong and continue the fight of our ancestors for significant change.
I thank Aunty Bronwyn Chambers for bringing this theme to life in Darkinjung language, and I acknowledge that NAISDA resides on the sovereign lands of the Darkinjung people. I deeply thank and pay respect to their Elders past and present who nurture this beautiful Country.
The 2022 NAIDOC theme is titled “Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!” and NAISDA’s Mid-Year Show had been inspired by this theme. A quote from NAIDOC this year states that “From the frontier wars and our earliest resistance fighters to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities fighting for change today – we continue to show up.” This is at the heart of every work that has been included in this year’s Mid-Year Show.
The Developing Artists have all been deeply embedding their learning and research within their units in the many social, political and physical issues that affect us as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Whether throughout history, or what we still face today as a result of the impact of colonisation, we need change. This research has formed the base of each of these works you will see here today. The subject matter, movement composition and production elements are all driven by the Developing Artists at NAISDA. This is their voice, their hunger for change, and their call to action for all of us and each other – a call for systemic change to Australia.
Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! for change.
